COMIC COVER trivia and FIRSTS

Quick! Where did Superman make his first appearance? Where did Batman? how about Iron Man? Yeah, I know these are easy questions but what about which comic was first to be glow-in-the-dark? Which was first to be a variant? got you there right? As much as we know about the character themselves, we know little about the comics books that hold them. For example, did you know there is a comic that has a bullet hole in it and it’s used as part of the story as well? keep reading and soon you will know the answers to these and other questions that will make you the King of Trivia!

First Cover to use a Hologram

Boffo Laffs #1

This book is from 1986 by ParaGraphics. It holds the honor of being the first comic to have a hologram on its cover. Although not a book in any kind of demand, it is still cool to own. Unfortunately, there is nothing on the census for this book yet. You can actually still get hold of this for under $10 if you look around well enough. At least now you who did it first!

First Cover to have a Variant

Man of Steel #1 Variant

So this is the book that we must all blame for every single damn variant that hits the market. It holds the title as the first book to intentionally have a variant. considering that then we have seen publishers go crazy with variants (look at Detective Comics #1000). This variant cover was created by the fantastic John Byrne who has also done work on the X-Men and fantastic Four. Still available for dirt cheap with a graded 9.8 having an FMV of only $70. long term value? Personally, I see none, but like with lots of here, still worth having one.

First Comic to be shot with a bullet

JAB #3

You read that right! limited to about 3,000 copies, each book was shot in the center with a real bullet. The bullet used is a .22 caliber round. The bullet hole is actually worked into the artwork making it a very cool comic to own. Although we see nothing in the census, it’s worth owning just because come on, where else will you find a comic with an intentional bullet hole? That alone makes it worth having, just don’t spend a lot more than $50 on it.

First Glow-in-the-Dark Cover

Ghost Rider #15

This beautiful cover is the first to use Glow-in-the-Dark ink to light the fires of hell on Ghost Rider. This variant still holds a great FMV with a 9.8 holding at $90. If you have one, cool, if not, don’t worry I don’t think this will be a regrettable miss. However, believe it or not, heating these covers on a heat press brings back the ink to allow it to glow again.

Most Variant Variant Cover

Quantum & Woody #1 Variant

Yes, there is a comic that actually holds this title as well. This variant has the most variants when compared to others. It features Chromium, Die-Cut, Foil, Embossing, Iridescent Ink, Lenticular, a sticker, and is hand-numbered. but wait! There’s more! (Actually no there isn’t just couldn’t resist).  Currently, this book is sitting pretty at 9.8 being valued at $300 with an all-time high of $595 in 2018. worth getting? Eh but cool to own.

So there are a few cool tidbits for you to brag to your friends about. would you like to see a lot more comic trivia? drop me a line below!

Do any of you own a copy of any of these keys? If so leave a comment!

Till next time, delighted Hunting!

Batman: Year One commemorative edition

The animated film version of Batman: Year One came out a little over ten years ago. The studio has now released Batman: Year One commemorative edition on 4K UltraHD to mark the anniversary. (And they were kind enough to send me a copy!)

This is one of the better DCU animated movies, as you can see in my original review.

All the essential extras have been carried over from the previous package. That includes the “DC showcase presents Catwoman” short cartoon; the commentary with Alan Burnett (but also Mike Carlin, Andrea Romano, and Sam Liu); the featurette “Heart of Vengeance: Returning Batman to His Roots”; and “Conversations With DC Comics”. That last one is bittersweet, as it features Denny O’Neill, Michael Uslan, Dan DiDio, and Scott Snyder. DiDio is no longer active in comics, while Denny has because passed away.

The promotion pieces have changed, of course. instead of ads for upcoming green lantern and Superman and Justice league animated movies, we get previews for the much much more thematically connected Batman: The long Halloween part One and part two and Batman: soul of the Dragon.

Most interesting to me, as I love behind-the-scenes pieces, was the new, 22-minute “Reinventing Gordon”. using clips from various media appearances — cartoons, movies, Gotham, the 60s Batman TV show, and comics — the featurette offers a history of Jim Gordon from the beginning.

Participating are:

Michael Uslan

Jeph Loeb

James Tynion IV

Jim Lee

Frank Miller (missing from the extras on the original film release, and a welcome addition)

Joëlle Jones

Bryan Cranston (who played the character in this movie)

J.K. Simmons (who played him in Justice League)

Jeffrey Wright (who played him in the upcoming The Batman movie)

The participants talk about how the stories went from Batman “needing a cop” to deal with the details and congratulate him, to Gordon becoming a foil and an ally. He represents the bureaucracy Batman is a reaction to, but they’re still colleagues. There’s the innate contrast of the law helping a vigilante and vice versa.

I found this special a substantial addition with some good insights. If you don’t already have the movie, this is worth picking up on November 9.

Beasts of problem Returns in One-Shot Comic

Although I’m a fan of book-format comics, such as the beautiful Beasts of Burden: animal Rites collection, sometimes, you need to get the comics. In this case, it’s unclear how lots of a lot more Beasts of problem stories there will be in future, but there’s at least one a lot more one-shot coming.

Beasts of Burden: What the cat Dragged In is co-written by Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer and painted by Jill Thompson. Their work with these supernatural family pets has won several Eisner Awards, for best single Issue, best publication for Teens, and Thompson as best Painter.

The concept is cute but scary — a group of neighborhood dogs fight mystical monsters to secure their home and friends. only this time, the focus is on the felines. As the promotional material has it, “When curiosity gets the best of problem Hill’s cats (and one reluctant raccoon), sleeping demons are awakened and black magic is unleashed on the town of problem Hill.”

Darken has also been asking for letters for a text column for the issue, where he reveals the issue aims to “answer the question about where Dymphna disappears to at night.”

Beasts of Burden: What the cat Dragged In will be in stores may 4, and you can preorder it from your local comic shop with diamond code MAR16 0030. (And considering that there have been three other uncollected one-shots — neighborhood enjoy in August 2012, Hunters & Gatherers in March 2014, and a Hellboy crossover in October 2010 — there might be a second book coming that reprints them all.)

Bakuman volume 9

as with any addiction, in some cases I’m scared to talk about the hold Bakuman has on me. I called the series one of my best Manga of 2011, due to how much I delight in and anticipate reading it, but I well know that it also has flaws, mostly relating to its horribly cardboard female characters. Still, I look forward to each new volume with terrific gusto, because I love following the struggles of the manga artists and the details revealed about the industry, especially how they work with the magazine staff who are their bosses.

The boys’ original editor is now working with Iwase, introduced in the previous volume as a rival for Takagi, the writer. I like her skills, but her motivation to beat Takagi as a way of forcing him to be interested in her is ridiculous. The rest of her attitudes, though, are quite amusing. When told her series was accepted for serialization, her editor is amazed that she’s not much more excited. She responds, “It’s just that I’ve never failed an exam or had a submission turned away in my life.” I could grow to like her.

Perhaps I ought to follow Ed’s guidance of simply ignoring any relationship story pages and just read the bits about making comics. That especially goes for the subplot of Takagi promising his girlfriend they’d get married if their new story got accepted as a series. I suspect that’s to allow for comedy bits, such as Mashiro pretending to be her dad so Takagi can practice asking him for her hand, but it’s at best funny in an unpleasant way. few American readers can relate to either wanting to get married so young or the girlfriend’s lack of any ambition or goals for herself.

Anyway, Iwase’s artist is Nizuma, taking on a second series in a groundbreaking decision, and he’s always a pleasure to see much more of, because he comes the closest to “crazy obsessive artistic genius” in type. (I wouldn’t want to work with him, but he’s terrific to read about, especially how everyone else uses him as a barometer for talent.) how all the other young creators take the news of the new series allows for checking in with the broad cast of supporting players. I particularly like the brief mentions we get of Hiramaru, the one who can’t make a deadline without his editor sitting in his room staring at him. He’s developed a crush on miss Aoki (who’s shown on the cover), and his editor is taking terrific advantage of this romantic pressure point to keep him working. (I like her, too, in her quiet certainty and her request to only work with female assistants to avoid complications.)

The much more I read, the much more I share the guys’ dislike for their editor, who doesn’t seem to know much about what he’s doing. even when he is clear on his goals, they’re not the same as what the young boys want, pointing out how what’s good for the manga magazine and the company may not be the best thing for the artists. He does get some development this volume, though, learning to make different kinds of choices.

The conflict in this installment is that the boys’ new manga is doing well, but it’s a joke-based series that mostly appeals to kids. It’s successful, but none of their pals like it, because it’s too young for them. Those friends, meanwhile, are working on series that rank higher, so the men have to figure out whether to be satisfied with what they have or strive to create something much more artistically challenging. In short, it’s the classic argument of art vs. commerce, whether a working developer ought to objective for prestige and recognition or stability and money.

Once again, we’re left with a cliffhanger that puts the guys’ profession on the line, all the while they’re shaking up the typical way of working. It becomes clear that Takagi’s marriage is another way of ramping up the potential effects, because he’s going to have a partner to support. changing his state is a way of signifying the significance of learning to make adult decisions. I ought to have had much more faith in the Bakuman creators — they use their characters like paper dolls, the women especially, but there’s always a dramatic purpose behind it. (The publisher offered a review copy.)

CANIBUS as well as VINNIE PAZ-Blood siblings (Mixtape)

I’m conflicted.  Vinnie Paz is a legend as the muscular lyricist as well as primary voice of one of the biggest underground hardcore rap groups of all time, Jedi Mind Tricks.  however Canibus is . . . type of lame.  I understand he’s got his fans, however ever considering that Eminem totally destroyed him, I can’t believe of him as anything however a huge pussy.

“Blood Brothers” is a street album a lot more than a mixtape–it’s well mixed, there’s no shouting DJ, as well as the tunes are completely developed as well as complete.  as well as a lot of of them are quite damn good, too.  The Paz parts, at least, are consistently solid.  as well as Canibus is a great deal much better than I expected him to be.

It’s absolutely a deserving mixtape.  however the genuine reason I’m tossing it up is since it’s timely.  The tune “Black Christmas” is quite damn funny.
